Becoming the owner of a practice is often viewed as one of the pinnacles of success for an optometrist, however that success can suddenly be derailed by a sudden change in lease rate or a shift in landlord mindset. Owning real estate that houses a private practice allows an optometrist substantial benefits in terms of taxes, future financial planning and legacy. This course will go over the pros and cons of investing in real estate for a practice (owner occupied real estate) including financial/tax implications. Additionally, it will cover developing real estate vs. buying existing real estate, the avenues of revenue that owning commercial real estate can open up, and the long term effect that real estate ownership can have both on a practice and the patients it serves.
